Western Service Worker’s Association
In the summer of 2020, after losing my job due to the pandemic, I learned that an Oakland-based organization, the WSWA, needed a graphic designer to help them produce their summer newspaper issue.
I immediately reached out to them and joined the organization after learning about the crucial work they do for the community, offering to volunteer my expertise because I believed very strongly in their mission. They work in East Oakland to provide “emergency food, clothing, preventative medical care, non-emergency dental care, legal advice, and ‘Know Your Law’ sessions and more” to low-income residents and those in need.
I spent the summer working alongside a long-time volunteer, who provided stories, information and photos for me that I integrated into the newspaper layout. The issue I designed included stories in both English and Spanish about restoring water rights to local residents and the organization’s work to deliver essential supplies to the community during the height of the COVID-19 crisis.
